Theme of the '00s? Unpaid bills
tzleft.david.frum.ckennedy.jpg
t's sometimes said that the '00s opened with a Pearl Harbor and ended with a Great Crash. Yet this dramatic decade still lacks even a name. The Forties had big bands and a bigger war, the Sixties protests and hippies, the Seventies "malaise." But what do we call the decade just ending?  The Double-Zeros? The late Bill Safire suggested the Naughties, "nought" being an old-fashioned term for "zero" (as in dough-nought). Whatever you call them, the years from 2000 on have been united by one great theme: This is the decade when the bills came due for neglected problems.

Refugee returns to Sudan to sign up voters

Daniel Deng, like thousands of other children, walked hundreds of miles to escape Sudan's war zone, moving for months farther and farther from his home country.

"We had to walk the whole night ... we maybe rest for an hour," he told CNN of the journey about two decades ago.

The trek, which robbed him of his ability to walk, took him to Ethiopia, then to Kenya, then eventually far from the Africa continent to the United States. he carved out a comfortable life in Colorado working in the IT industry, far from the war-torn, dusty land of his childhood.

Now using a wheelchair, Deng has returned to help register voters in Southern Sudan ahead of two very important votes. The first, in April, is to elect Sudan's presidential, state and legislative leaders.

Iran seeks release of arms dealer facing sentence in U.S.

Iran is calling for the release of an Iranian arms dealer who U.S. authorities say tried to illegally buy U.S. weapons for the Tehran government and was secretly charged, arrested and extradited, state-run media reported Monday.
Iran's Press-TV reported that Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki wants the United States to secure the "unconditional release" of Amir Hossein Ardebili, who is scheduled to be sentenced December 14 by a federal judge in Wilmington, Delaware.
Ardebili, of Shiraz, Iran, was captured by Georgian agents in a sting operation in the Eastern European nation of Georgia in 2007. He was transported to Wilmington, where he was held, and he pleaded guilty in 2008, federal officials said last week.
The case was kept under wraps for two years while U.S. authorities tracked leads gleaned from Ardebili's computer that helped reveal Iran's secret campaign to buy sensitive U.S. military equipment, federal officials said last week.

Microsoft investigating 'screen of death'
A blog suggests the black screen issue can occur on a wide range of Windows machines up through Windows 7.
Microsoft said on Monday that it is looking into reports that its latest security updates are causing some serious problems for certain users. The problem has been dubbed the "black screen of death" because those affected are left with a black desktop and little else on their screen. "Microsoft is investigating reports that its latest release of security updates is resulting in system issues for some customers," the software maker said in a statement. "Once we complete our investigation, we will provide detailed guidance on how to prevent or address these issues.  "The issue was noted by British security firm Prevx on its blog on Friday, with that company also offering a suggested fix for the problem.
